Rivers Xmas Discount Market Begins December 1
Ahead of the festive period with attendant hike in prices of goods, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has approved the hosting of the maiden Christmas Discount Market designed to palliate the seasonal inflation that characterises the period.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Chuma C. Chinye explained that the planned Christmas discount market would be hosted at the Liberation Stadium which would also be the venue of the Christmas festival (CARNIRIV).
The market with the theme “make poor man follow Chop Christmas”, according to the commissioner, would be for a period of one month begining from December 1.
Chinye said participants at the market would be drawn from major manufacturers and retailers of consumers brands such as food stuff, confectioneries and drinks who are expected to partner with the state government by offering products at agreed discount prices.
He expressed the concern that at every Xmas season, the citizens of the state brace up to the rising prices of consumer goods including food stuff, confectioneries, livestock, textile/clothing material and general household provisions even as the income of the respective citizens do net experience increase.
He said it was the decision and determination of the state government that its citizens enjoy a better deal particularly at this period to give them a sense of belonging in governance of the state.
According to the commerce commissioner, government would also provide uninterrupted power supply 24-hour security at the market area as well as uniformed market guides, public toilets etc as part of the incentives to promote sales throughout the duration of the market.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
