NDELA Impounds 6.390kg Of Cocaine
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says it has foiled the planned importation of 6.390 kilogrammes of narcotics into the country on Sallah day by a drug cartel.
NDLEA Spokesman, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, said in a statement issued in Lagos on Monday that the substances were suspected to be cocaine.
Ofoyeju said that two suspects were arrested during search operations on passengers arriving from Brazil aboard Qatar Airline at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
“A shipment of 5.300kg of cocaine hidden inside ladies handbags was on Sunday, intercepted at about 2 p.m.
“Another seizure of 1.090kg of cocaine was last week detected in the belly of a passenger with the aid of a scanning machine.’’
According to the statement, the conceal meat of the hard drugs was believed to have been masterminded by members of an international drug cartel that smuggles cocaine first from Brazil to West Africa and from West Africa to Europe and America.
It said that arrests were also made in connection with the cocaine seizures valued at N51 million.
Ofoyeju quoted the NDLEA Commander at the MMIA, Hamza Umar, as saying that the suspects included a 39-year-old man named, Olalekan Idris Bamidele.
He was said to have checked in a luggage containing 5.300kg into a Qatar Airline flight at Sao Paulo and was arrested on arrival at the Lagos airport on Sunday.
The statement also said that Nnanna Kenneth Chukwuma, 39, was arrested for testing positive to drug ingestion.
“While Nnana was under observation, he excreted the ingested drug that tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.090kg.’’
According to the statement, Mr Ahmadu Giade, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, expressed delight over the arrests, particularly that of Olalekan Idris Bamidele.
“He wanted to take advantage of the Islamic festival to import 5.300kg of cocaine into the country.
“Though, drug barons are wise in exploring ways of smuggling drugs, we are wiser in detecting the drugs and arresting them. This arrest is a warning that we are always at alert to scuttle their next plan.
“We shall continue to expose their devices until they quit the criminal trade,” Giade was quoted as saying.
In his message to the nation on the occasion of Eid-el Kabir, Giade urged Nigerians to contribute to national peace by supporting the anti-drug campaign programme of the NDLEA.
“Let us shun drug trafficking and abuse and report any suspicious illegal drug transaction at the nearest NDLEA office. A drug free society is our dream, let us consciously work towards it,” he said.
The statement said that the suspects would soon be charged to court.
