The Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Nemi who said this Wednesday, during the launching of free books, school uniforms and bags in Port Harcourt, said that 82 of the completed schools had been furnished, 155 fenced while 102 are currently undergoing fencing work.
Dame Nemi also said that it was the policy of the present administration to promote free and compulsory primary and junior secondary education.
“The free education policy is a programme where the government provides everything a child needs to be comfortable in school. This administration is providing free books, schools uniforms, bags and sandals to pupils in the state in order to motivate the children to come to school.
“These gestures have been seen by many as the greatest investment any government can make to its citizens”, she said.
The commissioner also warned school administrators to desist from selling the uniforms to their pupils, stressing that anyone caught in the act would not be spared.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr Richard Ofuru stressed the need for students to make the best use of the library and internet facilities provided by the government in the schools.
The Permanent Secretary also commended the state Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi for providing a conducive environment for learning in the state.
