FG Pledges To Boost Tyre Production
The Federal Government will address the problems associated with the production of tyres in the country, Dr Samuel Ortom, the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, has said.
Ortom gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja when he received the Group Managing Director of Dunlop Tyres Nigeria Plc, Mr Mohammed Yinusa.
“ At this critical state that the government has promised to provide jobs to create wealth for teeming Nigerians, we cannot afford to lose this industry to anywhere else,’’ the minister said.
Government, he added, would address the challenges being faced by the company to enable it resume operations in the country.
Yinusa had said the slash in tariff on imported tyres into the country had led to the stoppage of the company’s production in the country.
He said that the development also led to the sack of more than 3,000 workers employed by a subsidiary of the company.
Yinusa urged government to discourage importation of tyres into the country by increasing tariff.
