NSF: Wrestlers Still Need Coaching Clinics – Director
The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has said that most wrestlers competing at the ongoing 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt are not inclined with the current rules in the sport.
NWF Technical Director, Demian Ohaike told newsmen, yesterday in Port Harcourt that they needed coaching clinics to keep them abreast of the rules.
He said without proper understanding of the rules, it would be difficult for wrestlers to compete optimally at international competitions adding that most of the wrestlers are amateurs.
He appealed to state’s associations to organise coaching clinics for wrestlers for them to be able to understand the rules proper.
“Most of the wrestlers at the festival do not understand the current rules, they needed coaching clinics and further grooming for them to take part in international competitions.
“Though we have the national contenders who are in national camp but I still see some few wrestlers in this festival who are good enough to contest with our national wrestlers,’’ he said.
Ohaike also said that lack of modern equipment and kits was one of the challenges militating against the development of the sport.
He said equipment like electronic score board, wrestling shoes, wrestling mats, mouth guard and computers for computing results.
The Technical chief said most of the equipment they were still using are obsolete and does not conform with international standard.
He also said lack of sponsorship was also relegating the federation to the back saying that corporate organisations should rally round the sport for its promotion.
In the wrestling overall result made available to newsmen, Delta topped the male medals chart with five gold and one bronze medals.
Rivers followed with three gold, two silver and one bronze while Bayelsa came third with two gold and three silver medals.
In the female bout, Ondo led with three gold, one silver, Delta came behind with one gold and one silver while Rivers claimed third position with one gold and two bronze medals.
