CARNIRIV Gets Legal Backing, Soon
Rivers State Government plans to legalise its annual cultural festival, otherwise known as CARNIRIV in order to make it a permanent event on the State cultural calendar·
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi disclosed this last Friday while receiving the CARNIRIV 2010 Report from Messagewise Limited, consultants to the event at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi said the Rivers State Carnival Development Agency Bill 2011 when passed into law will institutionalise and sustain the event, noting that “the carnival had re-awakened the interest of our people in their cultural heritage”.
Optimistic that this year’s edition of the carnival would showcase improvements in several aspects, the State Governor said that for Rivers people and friends of the State, it is “a date to keep”, urging all to get set to participate fully this year.
Amaechi thanked the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Messagewise Ltd and other stakeholders for their collaboration, observing that such collaboration had proved beneficial to the success of the event, and advised organisers of the event to begin early to prepare for the next edition.
Presenting an overview of the Report, Executive Vice Chairman of Messagewise Limited, Dr Henry Nzekwu, noted that CARNIRIV 2010 succeeded in mustering an unprecedented interministerial and interagency collaboration that ensured delivery of the carnival, adding that the input of volunteers and key stakeholders served the event well.
Dr Nzekwu said that efforts were being made to project the carnival on the global platform, calling on the government to increase the event’s budget with a view to giving it better media coverage, even as he assured that this year’s edition would exceed expectations.
He, however, regretted that the event witnessed some shortcomings, assuring that such areas would be addressed in subsequent editions. He also expressed appreciation to the State Government for the opportunity to serve and the support from corporate organisations, security agencies and other stakeholders.
The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Marcus Nle-Ejii, Chairman of the South-South Caucus in the House of Representatives, Chief Andrew Uchendu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Culture, Mr. Iboroma Harry, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Paulinus Nwankwoala, Nollywood artiste, Mr. Sam Dede, ace comedian and Producer of Yibo Ensemble, Mr. Yibo Koko, were among dignitaries that witnessed the submission of the report.
