Teacher’s Kidnap Pupils Shun Classes
Activities at the St. Andrew’s Primary School, Ikwerre Road, Port Harcourt have been partially paralysed as pupils have refused to attend classes following the kidnap of one of their teachers, last week Wednesday.
The Weekend Tide investigation revealed that the teacher, Mrs Catherine Okakwu was whisked away at about 6.45 am on the fateful day by men of the underworld on her arrival at the school premises to resume work for the day.
Some eye witnesses who spoke to The Weekend Tide on the incident said about four men pounced on Okakwu’s black KIA Jeep car as it stopped in the school premises on the said morning, dragged the driver out of the vehicle and drove away with her.
Some of the teachers who spoke to The Weekend Tide on condition of anonymity said as a result of the kidnap, the only security man in the school, Mr ThankGod Gillis has been in police detention since the day of the incident.
They also stated that some persons who had gone to see Mr Gillis in detention were also threatened with arrest.
Consequently, pupils of the school have stopped attending classes for fear of being kidnapped.
According to a source in the school, for the fact that there has been no information on the whereabouts of Mrs Okakwu, parents are scared of sending their children or wards to the school.
During his solidarity visit to the school, Tuesday, the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB), executive chairman, Sir Alli Oruitemeka, assured teachers of the school that the state government was “doing something about the security problem of the school and the release of the teacher.”
The RSUBEB boss, who was accompanied by members of his board on the visit, also urged the teachers to be calm and go about their normal duties.
On his part, the state Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) chairman, Comrade Moses Adiele called on the state government to demarcate the St. Andrew’s Church and its school from the other three schools housed in the school compound.
The compound currently houses four schools viz St Andrew’s State Schools I and II, St Thomas, and St Andrew’s Anglican Church School.
When contacted, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Rita Inoma-Abbey, confirmed the story.
