Super Eagles Walk Tight Rope …Loses 1-2 To Lowly Rated Greece
The Super Eagles of Nigeria, yesterday at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa suffered a consecutive loss at the on-going 2010 World Cup to visually rule themselves out of the mundial second round.
They fell 1-2 to Greece, which signal that Nigeria may leave South Africa just the same way it left the World Cup the last time in Korea/Japan 2002.
Interestingly, it was a match that the Eagles needed to win to have a realistic chance of advancing in the tournament, and they looked to be right on track after 16 minutes when Kalu Uche shot them ahead via a free kick.
It however, went all wrong for the Super Eagles midway into the game when Sani Kaita suffered a rush of blood to the head. He got into a tussle with Greece’s Vasileios Torosidis as the ball went for a throw in and then lashed out with his foot. Referee Osacar Ruiz flashed a straight red at him and Nigeria was reduced to 10 players.
The deficit buoyed the Greeks as they pushed for goals, which they got one minute before the break off a deflection by Lukman Haruna, and the winner in the second half after Keeper Vincent Enyeama spilled a shot and Torosidis took advantage.
Overall, Enyeama emerged the hero again for Nigeria, and Man of the match after pulling off series of fantastic saves.
Now, the Super Eagles are on a tight rope with only a mathematical chance of making it to the second round.
Super Eagles’ progress to the next stage depends on combination of results in which the Eagles must play their part and hope for the best.
Argentina leads the group with maximum six points and almost guaranteed a slot in the second round.
Nigeria, despite being bottom of the group can join the Argies in the next round if the Eagles can defeat South Korea and Diego Maradona’s men beat Greece in the final group B match.
Reacting to the loss, yesterday, Captain Joseph Yobo admitted that the sending of Kaita played a role but that the team largely showed inexperience, especially by certain players.
He said that Nigeria was in control of the game especially after scoring but let it slip away.
Yobo believed that the result has put the Eagles out of reckoning in the tournament.
