NUJ President Tasks RSG, Corporate Bodies On Union’s Building
The National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr. Mohammed Garba has tasked the Rivers State Government and corporate bodies to help the Rivers State Council of the body to acquire a new secretariat.
Mr. Garba said the NUJ Secretariat, which was devastated by heavy storm few months ago needs to be rehabilitated or a new secretariat built for the body considering the work journalists do to develop the society.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after inspecting the building in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Mr. Garba declared that the building which houses the activities of journalists was overdue for rehabilitation.
He noted that the current state of the secretariat do not present the state well and posed a huge setback to the activities of journalists in the state.
“Going by the position of Rivers State as one of the vibrant states in NUJ, I think the building is overdue for reconstruction. The building should be demolished and a new one set up”, Garba noted.
He appealed to the state government and well meaning persons in the state to come to the rescue of the union by constructing a beffiting press centre as obtained in Bayelsa State.
Garba asserted that with the status of Rivers State in the country, the NUJ deserves a befitting press centre, but noted that the responsibility cannot be solely carried by the union considering the financial implication.
Garba further stressed that for the NUJ activities to be carried out effectively, “the secretariat need urgent attention … I think that is my prayer and I believe the Rivers State Government should come to their rescue”.
The NUJ Secretariat building located at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, was in April, devastated by heavy storm, which pulled the roof-off and has since remained in that situation.
State Chairman of the body, Mr. Opaka Dokubo, said properties worth millions of naira was destroyed by the incident, saying that he had made several appeals to government and public spirited individuals to come to the rescue of the body.
