Microfinance Banks Move To Revitalise Self
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) has initiated a 10-point mission to revitalise the industry.
The blueprint was released on Sunday in Benin after a NEC meeting attended by key stakeholders.
Addressing the meeting, Chief Matthias Omeh, the National President of NAMB, said the association was committed to redeeming the image of and re-focusing the industry.
He said the need to deliver the mission though a strategic partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and ensure the emergence of stronger microfinance banks was top on the blueprint.
“The central point of all this is how to ensure that stronger microfinance banks emerge through the sanitisation of the industry,” Omeh said.
Mrs Bunmi Lawson, the Managing Director of Accion Microfinance Bank, Lagos, who was elected the new National Treasurer of NAMB, lauded the mission, saying the goal would be achieved through diligence.
“I know various agenda have been initiated and re-initiated to achieve some goals to develop the industry.
“Microfinance banks have a key role to play in developing the country because a good percentage of foreign countries see Nigeria as a rich country.
“To achieve this, the CBN must involve leaders in the industry in the reformation process of the microfinance sub-sector,” Lawson said.
The mission entails seeking support for microfinance banks from the government, development institutions and donor agencies.
It also envisages the need to seek and undertake bilateral visits, meetings, conferences and exchange programmes with foreign microfinance banks, associations, donor agencies and relevant UN and World Bank economic development institutions. Another goal of the missions is the arrangement of capacity building training for members in collaboration with relevant bodies and interested organisations.
The mission further envisages the need to ensure that the executive of the NAMB at the zonal level will only be made up of managing directors and chairmen of the microfinance banks.
The committee says the 10-point plan also seeks to establish an endowment fund from which member banks can source funds in critical emergencies.
The mission similarly speaks of the need to take an in-depth look at the training needs of members and come up with recommendations.
The NAMB, as an umbrella body of microfinance institutions, was commissioned by the CBN on November 12, 2009 to oversee the activities of all licensed microfinance banks in the country.
