Expert Calls For Measures Against Earthquake
Dr Umar Danbatta, Head of the Geology Department in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, wants the Federal Government to evolve necessary measures to forestall the occurrence of any earthquake in the country.
Danbatta spoke with newsmen in Abuja.
He said the recent earthquake in Haiti indicated that the government needed to introduce necessary measures to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of an earthquake in the country.
“Earthquake is one of the most destructive natural hazards and its familiar consequences are loss of human life, destruction and damages to facilities and the natural environment.
“The damage and sudden crippling of the economy of a developing country may affect its development and leave an indelible mark for a considerably long time,’’ the don said. Danbatta said that since it had been established that developing countries were more prone to earthquakes, there was the need for various programmes to check the hazards they posed.
He also urged the introduction of earthquake-resistant designs in the country. “The occurrence of seismic activity in Western Nigeria in Ibadan and Ijebu-Ode in 1984, demonstrates that damaging earthquakes can occur in Nigeria,’’ he said.
Danbatta said that zones which were structurally dynamic and could suffer earthquakes included those with outline stratigraphy and structures of the Niger Delta area, among others.
According to him, such areas have growth faults, thick sediments and petroleum resources as well as various oil mining activities, which could trigger man-made earthquakes.
He said the geology of Nigeria’s continental margin equally revealed the presence of equatorial fracture zones with similar trends among rifts which cut deeply into the basement of the country. Danbatta said several occurrences of tar balls along Nigeria’s coast also suggested that some of these fractures were active and might be responsible for the oil seeps on the country’s continental shelf. “This development suggests that the Nigerian continental margin might be seismically active as exemplified by the 1984 tremors in southwestern Nigeria,” he added.
According to him, the development may be due to movements associated with the submarine faults and fracture systems.
Danbatta said the department planned to organise a national seminar on Natural Disasters in Nigeria from August 7 to 9 in Zaria .
