Why Our Schools Decay – Gov Obi
Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi has blamed the decay in the school system in Anambra on the take over of schools from the missionaries.
Obi said this in Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area when he inaugurated the two-wing hostel of a school, rehabilitated by Techno Oil Ltd, Lagos.
He said that government’s decision to take over schools from their original owners affected the development of infrastructure in many schools.
“It is for this reason that the state government decided in 2009 to hand over all missionary schools to their original owners,” Obi said.
The governor called on citizens of the state to join hands with the government in the task of raising the standard of education.
Obi later presented a cheque for N3 million to the Principal of the school, Mr Felix Maduka, towards the construction of a borehole, to solve water scarcity at the institution.
Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of Techno Oil, Mrs Nkechi Obi, disclosed that her husband’s company spent N10 million to rehabilitate the hostel.
She said that the company would continue to identify with the efforts of the school, so as to make it a centre of excellence in line with the dream of its founding fathers.
“My husband, a product of the school before his death, was moved to tears over the deterioration of the infrastructure in the school as it was very dear to his heart,” Mrs Obi said.
