… Plead For Abducted Expatriates
Abia State Police Commissioner, Jonathan Johnson, has made a passionate appeal to the kidnappers of four expatriates working for an oil servicing company in Rivers State to release them unharmed in order not to provoke international condemnation of the country.
Johnson made the appeal in Umuahia, explaining that the action of the perpetrators were capable of jeopardising the good relationship between Nigeria and the victims’ countries of origin.
It would be recalled that three Britons and a Colombian engaged by NECODECIMA, a contracting firm with the Shell Petroleum Development Company were kidnapped in Owaza, in Ukwa West local government area of Abia State, a border community with Rivers States last Tuesday morning. It was learnt that a Police constable was killed during the abduction of the foreigners.
The incident is coming even after the Abia State government has proclaimed amnesty for militants in the state, promising them juicy packages and rehabilitation. Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. John Nwokocha, told newsmen Tuesday that about 12 kidnappers surrendered their arms to government in December.
The Police Commissioner said that so far, all efforts to establish link with the victims had proved abortive, as the kidnappers, after speaking on the first day they abducted the foreigners, switched off their phones.
He also appealed to youths who had taken to kidnapping to lay down their arms and engage in a more legitimate means of livelihood.
He further called on parents to watch their children closely to ensure that they do not get involved in criminal activities.
It was gathered that the three expatriates were kidnapped at Owaza, a border community between Abia and Rivers State last Tuesday on their way to the Afam Power Station. A Police Constable was said to have been killed during the abduction incident.
