Senate C’ttee On Constitution Review Visits PH ’morrow
The Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution would tomorrow begin a two-day public hearing for the South-South geo-political zone on the proposed alteration to the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A statement signed by acting Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Blessing Wikina said the hearing scheduled to hold Monday and Tuesday at the Atlantic Hall of the Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt by 10.00am daily is aimed at aggregating the views of the zone.
The governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi urged stakeholders from the six states of the zone and the general public to participate in the hearing for the review of the nation’s constitution.
Meanwhile, as the Senate moves round the six geopolitical zones to collate inputs for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, Governor Chibuike Amaechi has urged official representatives of the state to canvass for fiscal federalism.
He advised the traditional rulers and his economic council to ensure that they make necessary inputs that would place the interest and well-being of the region on the front burner.
The governor gave the directive at the last stakeholders meetings in Government House, Port Harcourt.
He maintained that there was need for the region to press for fiscal federalism to enable people of the area control their money.
“There is need for that official position since it involves all the states in the region who will be coming for the exercise on Monday. It is very important to us,” he said.
Explaining that he was not directing that only the issue of fiscal federalism would be canvassed there, the governor said it was the position of the state government.
