NCDMB Launches $50m Research Fund, Sept 9

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has concluded plans to host the 2nd edition of the Nigerian Content Research and Development Fair on September 9, 2021 at the NCDMB Conference Hall, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, announced this at a press conference organised in Lagos ahead of the fair, stressing that no country develops sustainably without focusing on research and development.
He explained that the board placed high premium on Research and Development as a critical enabler in achieving the target of 70 per cent local content by 2027, adding that the theme of this year’s event was: “Creating Sustainable Collaboration in Research and Development for the Energy Sector.”
He explained that the event would feature presentations of research breakthroughs, panel discussions on R&D pillars of success and a special feature on how Nigeria can adopt a sustainable acceleration programme for launching innovative ideas into the market.
The highlights of the fair would include the launching the NCDMB 10-Year R&D Roadmap by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva; commissioning of the Technology Innovation and Incubation Centre established by the NCDMB to facilitate innovation and incubation of ideas for market adoption and launching of the $50million R&D Fund utilization protocol.
The executive secretary recalled that the maiden edition of the R&D Fair was organized in 2017, where research breakthroughs were exhibited, and linkages were facilitated between researchers and end-users in the oil and gas industry.
He remarked that the board had recorded significant progress in elevating industry collaboration on R&D since the last edition.
Some of the accomplishments included the establishment of Nigerian Content Research and Development Council to advise the board on matters relating to research and development in the oil and gas industry, and Development of R&D 10-Year Strategic Road Map, which will be launched during the 2021 R&D Fair.
Other achievements included the development of frameworks for supporting research breakthroughs to products for industry application, adding that over 20 researchers are benefiting from the board’s intervention.
He added that the board also created $50million Research and Development Fund as well as signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish R&D Centres of Excellence in five universities, notably Federal Universities of Technology in Minna, Akure and Owerri; Niger Delta University, Amasoma; and Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.
Speaking further, Wabote confirmed that the board would use the $50million Research and Development Fund to support research findings that have practical utilisation, and have capability of being commercialised and applied to solve teething problems in the economy.
He noted that for any researcher to benefit from the fund, he would have to go through a rigorous process of proving the relevance of the research and commercial viability, hinting that the fund did not require any collateral or guarantee.

Mother, Child Electrocuted After Downpour In Benin

A 32-year-old fashion designer identified as Mrs Sarah David and her three-month-old daughter were reportedly electrocuted in Benin City, Edo State.
The Tide’s source gathered that the incident happened recently around the Oregbeni area of the Benin-Agbor road.
It was gathered that the woman had the baby on her back when the unfortunate incident happened.
It was learnt that the woman was walking through a flooded road in the area, after a heavy downpour, when she stepped on a live electric cable that fell from one of the electricity poles.
An eyewitness account had it that one of the children of the deceased was so lucky as a young man who was also walking alongside took the child and passed through a different direction.
According to him, the young woman who wrapped her newborn baby on her back was electrocuted.
“She and her baby were electrocuted while going home. She passed through one of the flooded roads around the Oregbeni axis of the Benin-Agbor highways in Benin City when she stepped on a live electric cable that fell from one of the electricity poles in the area.
“After the incident, some residents in the area called on the authorities of the Benin Electricity Distribution company, BEDC, to interrupt electricity supply to the area before the corpses of the woman and her baby were removed from the flooded area.
‘The corpses were removed by some residents assisted by some police officers from the Oregbeni Police Division.
“She was, however, lucky that the second child did not die along with her, as a young man who was walking with them while they were trying to walk through the erosion helped to carry the little child from her.
“ If not, the three of them would have been electrocuted. The young man took the child from and passed through another direction”, he said.
Speaking of the incident, the husband of the deceased, Mr Samuel Ibom, described his wife as the breadwinner of the family.
Ibom said his wife, who hailed from Ebonyi State, was a fashion designer before the unfortunate incident.
He said he had just gotten a job a few days before the incident.
He, however, appealed to governments and well-meaning individuals to assist him with funds to first pay his wife’s bride price.
“I am begging governments and individuals to help me with money to first pay her bride price before burying her and my child”, he appealed.

HYPREP Commits To Prioritising Workers’ Welfare, Job Creation

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project(HYPREP) has restated its commitment to prioritise the welfare of its workers and the determination to continue to create jobs.
The Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey, who gave the indication in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, felicitated with workers across the country, especially those in HYPREP’s Coordination Office and community workers at its various project sites in Ogoniland over the recent May Day celebration.
Zabbey acknowledged the immense commitment, resilience and dedication the workers have demonstrated on the Ogoni cleanup programme, which he said has contributed significantly to the milestones achieved across critical projects like the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER); Ogoni Specialist Hospital; Buan Cottage Hospital; mangrove restoration sites; land and shoreline remediation sites; Ogoni Power Project; and water projects.
He noted that HYPREP is mindful of the benefit of creating a safe and productive work environment that engenders job satisfaction and self-attainment in the public interest, stressing that the Project places premium on workers’ welfare and continuous human capacity development in its Project Coordination Office and at its project sites.
He said HYPREP has through its numerous projects across Ogoniland created over 7,000 direct and indirect jobs, and helped develop skills and capacities of youth and women, especially in environmental remediation, saying, “By this, we are tackling unemployment and its attendant effects, fundamentally improving local economies, and positively impacting the Human Development Index(HDI).
The Project Coordinator explained that this year, through the dedication of its staff and community workers, HYPREP is working assiduously to ensure the timely completion and commissioning of various ongoing projects, including the Centre of Excellence, Ogoni Specialist Hospital, Buan Cottage Hospital, the Ogoni Power Project, and additional water projects.
While thanking the workers for their dedication to service, Zabbey said HYPREP is pleased to note that commissioning the various ongoing projects would create more jobs, thereby addressing unemployment in the region.
He indicated that HYPREP will continue to create jobs at its project sites through various skill acquisition and employability enhancement training, and congratulated all the workers, urging them to continue to be patriotic and committed to playing their noble roles, especially towards the collective vision to fully actualising the successful implementation of the Ogoni cleanup programme.

Eleme Indigenes Hail Council Boss Over Evacuation Of Refuse

Some indigenes and Residents of Eleme local Government Area of Rivers state have  hailed the Administrator of the council, Dr Gloria Obo Dibiah for the complete evacuation of refuse from the area in less than two months in office.
The residents who said this in an interview with newsmen at Eleme said the heaps of refuse around Eleme were becoming sources of concern to them.
They however commended Dr Dibiah for listening to the cries of the people, adding that in less than two months in office, all the refuse heaps in and around the local government area have been evacuated.
Speaking with newsmen a community leader in Onne  Chief Nchima Blessing Okasi praised the Administrator for living up to the expectations of the people of not only Onne but the entire Eleme local government area.
Chief Okasi  particularly said the refuse heaps at Allejor community, Onne, which evacuated was completely ignored by both companies operating in the area and previous administrations in Eleme Local Government Area.
“I want to sincerely thank the administrator for taking the pains to come and remove this rubbish.
“Before now, we applied to some companies operating around Onne to come in and remove it but unfortunately they have been giving unnecessary excuses.
“But today I was surprised when I got a call that the sole administrator is already here to evacuate it,” he said.
Also speaking Madam Mercy Ebu said businesses around Onne and other parts of Eleme were being affected by the number of refuse heaps in the area.
She said the situation was also affecting the health of the people following the increase in malaria parasite in the area.
On her part, Mrs Abigail who hails from Ogoni but resident in Eleme said Dr Gloria Obo Dibia has saved the area from epidemic as people could not sleep at night following constant odour oozing from refuse heaps in the area.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen while monitoring the evaluation of the refuse, the administrator of Eleme local government Area, Dr Gloria Obo Dibiah said the vision of her administration was for a green Eleme.
She said all the refuse heaps have been very hazardous not only to Eleme but also to those who pass through the area.
Dibiah further said that the programme was in line with the vision of the Rivers state Sole Administrator, IbokEteIbas ( rtd) who has directed Local Government Administrators to focus on sanitation, health care and security.
“If you look at the heaps behind me, you can tell that this has been here for quite a while and we know it’s been very hazardous.”
