Kenpoly May Become Environment Varsity
Processes leading to the conversion of the present Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori to a full flagged university may commence today as the matter would likely be one of the top issues in this week’s Rivers State Executive Council meeting.
Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike stated this when a Ogoni elite group – KAGOTE – delegation paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday.
The governor while responding to one of the several requests made by KAGOTE said he will set up a committee to look into the viability of the existing polytechnic transforming into university of environment.
Wike said the committee will consider, among other things, the facilities and manpower in the polytechnic, to ascertain the possibility of transforming the institution into a university.
He said: “I will set up a committee to look into it. But I think it is necessary. If for nothing, Ken started the course. It is necessary”.
The governor equally promised to facilitate the coming back of about 800 Ogoni refugees presently in Benin Republic.
Wike said he was not aware of the Ogoni refugee situation, remarking, however, that efforts would be made to ensure that their returning will not upset the security and hard earned peace in the area.
The governor stressed the need for Ogoni sons and daughters, particularly the political class, to work as a team and see the development of Ogoniland as above party interests.
KAGOTE President, Dr Peter Medee, who led a large delegation of the group on the visit, said the request for conversion of the polytechnic to a university of environment was in line with the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme report on the environmental assessment of the age-long pollution faced by Ogonis and Niger Delta region.
He said that the establishment of the university of environment would fulfil one of the cardinal recommendations of the UNEP report.
KAGOTE, as an acronym derived from Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme, is the apex elite leadership of Ogoni ethnic nationality.
