Investment In Knowledge, Economy, Panacea For Dev – Tam-George
The Rivers State Com
missioner for Information and Communications, Dr Austin Tam- George, has identified a shift from the monolithic oil based economy to knowledge economy as a panacea for sustainable development in the society.
Dr Tam-George gave the hint while speaking as a special guest on Sun Rise Daily, a live programme on Channels Television.
The commissioner noted that over-dependence on natural economy has stifled the prospect of economic growth in our society, and pointed out that; “human capital potentials and not oil is the greatest and most dependable asset”.
He said the Rivers State Government in line with the new Rivers Vision was setting the pace in effective development of human capital potentials, through investment in the education sector to attain a knowledge driven economy.
The commissioner also emphasised the need fqr the diversification of the economy by taking advantage of the huge potentials in the Agricultural sector beyond subsistence to mechanised farming to boost food sufficiency.
According to him “lack of commitment of government to its social contract with the people breeds skepticism among the people who see government as predatory and hostile”
He stressed the need for the various arms of governments to operate within the ambit of their constitutional role and in line with the principle of separation of powers.
“The unfettered interference in the activitieis of the legislative arm of Government in Rivers State by the previous administration in the State, made the Legislature an appendage of the· executive, as legislative duties were conducted inside government house”.
Commenting on the complaints of most State Governments over their inability to pay the 18 thousand naira minimum wage as a result of drop in Federal allocation, Dr Tam George said such claims were scandalous.
Rather, he called on states to invest in entrepreneurial and technological education to develop knowledge so as to create wealth.
Dr Tam-George said the Rivers State Government was poised to diversify its tax regime and also equip its educational institutions to become centres of excellence, through more funding, research and collaboration with foreign institutions.
