Kidnapping: Doctors Stage Protest
The Nigerian Medical
Association (NMA), Rivers State branch has staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt, over the incessant abductions of its members in the state.
Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr Furo Green who led the protest said that within 16 days, four doctors were kidnapped within the state, while one lost his life in the hands of his abductors.
Green decried the random kidnapping of doctors in the state, while recalling that 21 doctors were abducted last year.
He lamended the inability of the state security agencies to apprehend anyone connected to the kidnappings and appealed to them to rise to the occasion.
He further advised members of the public to be conscious of their environment and cooperate with the relevant security agencies in the state in the fight against crime.
Responding the state Commissioner for Health, Theophilus Odagme told the protesting doctors that the state government was doing its best to end kidnapping in the state.
He assured that their demands would be relayed to the state governor and necessary measures would be taken to rid the state of kidnappers.
The doctors who were seen with their laboratory coats and stethoscopes, and carrying placards with different inscriptions also marched to the police officers mess.
On his part the state commissioner of police, Musa Kimo gave his assurance that the command must protect them and other citizens of the state.
