Enugu To Train 6,000 Mathematics Teachers
The Enugu State Government says it will train 6,000
mathematics teachers for better understanding and studying of the subject among
students in the state.
The
state’s Commissioner for Education, Dr Simon Ortuanya, made this known when he
spoke to newsmen in Enugu on Friday.
Ortunaya
explained that enhancing mathematics education was crucial to reducing
examination failures as well as meet up with the world’s growing trend.
He added
that the country would not be able to achieve its Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) without the development and improvement in the learning and teaching of
mathematics.
“We have
been collaborating with the National Mathematical Centre to improve mathematics
education in the state. The feeling of the Enugu State Government and the
Ministry of Education in particular is that for any nation to grow, they must
be strong in mathematics and in sciences,” he said.
“You
cannot produce the nuclear physicists, scientists if you are not good in
mathematics. There is an ongoing conversion to train 6,000 mathematics teachers
in Enugu State. We think that mathematics is critical and crucial to the growth
of this nation,’’ the commissioner said.
Ortuanya
said the State Government would also fashion out some programmes to improve
science education in the state.
