Politician Seeks Resturcturing Of Police Force
A Calabar-based politician and medical practitioner, Dr Theo Onyeukwu, has called for the immediate restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force.
Onyeukwu, who was recently suspended as Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Cross River, made the call in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Calabar.
He said his views were in reaction to last week Thursday bomb blast at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, by a suspected Boko Haram member.
“We need total restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force and radical overhaul of the entire security system if we must overcome the reminiscent of what happened in Abuja.’’
The politician said that the restructuring should include training and retraining of policemen, particularly in modern security challenges, in line with global best practices.
“Government must take the training and retraining
of the police seriously, and should equip them with modern operational gadgets to make them combat ready at all times.’’
The suspended LP state chairman advised the Federal Government to enter into meaningful dialogue with the leadership of the Boko Haram sect with the view to granting them amnesty.
According to him, it is the only way peace can be guaranteed.
“My opinion is that the Federal Government should commence negotiation with Boko Haram members immediately because no meaningful development can take place in the midst of what the sect is doing.’’
He cited youth unemployment as one of the factors responsible for some of the anti-social vices in parts of the country.
“Youth unemployment is high everywhere in the country, and these youths are always willing tools in the hands of the militants.’’
The medical practitioner urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward curtailing the influx of migrants into the country through the borders.
“Our borders, particularly those in the Northern part of the country are very porous.
“ Government must do something about our borders to forestall the activities of some of these migrants.
