FCTA Impounds 41 Keke NAPEP Over Traffic Offences
In a bid to enforce the ban on the use of Keke NAPEP in designated areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, 41 tricycles otherwise referred to as “Keke NAPEP”.
Disclosing this to newsmen in Abuja, FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed said most of the operators of the tricycles impounded have no drivers license and by implication illegally riding on the highway and risking the lives of commuters.
According to Senator Mohammed, “It was also discovered that those riders whose tricycles were impounded are not members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) or Keke NAPEP Union and therefore wouldn’t have been able to share from the information derived from the previous stakeholders meeting”, adding that “accordingly, the FCT administration wishes to assure that the exercise will continue until the highways in the Federal Capital City are rid of the menace of Keke NAPEP and others who constitute traffic problems”.
Senator Mohammed therefore solicits for understanding and cooperation of all residents of the Federal Capital Territory to enable it take Abuja to the next level, saying that the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja belongs to all Nigerians and it is the window through which the world sees Nigerians.
The Tide correspondent in Abuja recalled that the administration on Sunday January 23,2011 commenced total enforcement of tricycles (Keke NAPEP) compliance to designated areas of operation within the Federal Capital City, Abuja.
Of late, there have been an upsurge of the entry of Keke NAPEP riders into unauthorised places such as Asokoro, Maitama and Central Business Districts respectively as well as some parts of Garki, Wuse and Expressways including Ring Roads 1& II.
