Dean Lists Gains Of Globalisation
The Dean, Faculty of Law, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Prof Nlerum S. Okogbule, has stressed the imperative of globalisation in the contemporary world.
He spoke while delivering the 45th inaugural lecture of the faculty with the theme: “Localising Human Rights In A Global World: The Challenge For Africa,” at the university’s premises, recently, in Port Harcourt.
Okogbule said that with globalisation, the world had now become a global village, where activities in one country could be witnessed or have indirect impact on other countries almost at the same time.
He noted that such was possible through technological means of globalisation, which he said, had so far, brought the world closer together.
The Law Professor, who is a two-time Dean of the faculty, also pointed out that the development had led to extinction of local languages, as the young people now prefer English Language to their native dialects.
On normative perspectives and challenges of globalisation, he further stated that poverty had so far been globalised.
While stressing the need for all to think globally and act locally, he said efforts must be made towards sustaining local values and norms, even in the global world.
On his achievements as dean of the faculty, he said that the e-system of library was made possible and available by his leadership.
Others, according to him, include current moot court with modern facilities to assist the institution in training global lawyers.
In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Blessing C. Didia, lauded the dean for his erudite attempt in disserting the meaning and importance of globalisation, and urged students of law and others to learn critical lessons and assimilate the teachings of the professor.
