NCC Reviews Broadband Services
The Nigerian Communications Commission
(NCC) says it has concluded the preliminary studies for cost effective
deployment of broadband services.
Dr. Eugene Juwah, the NCC Executive Vice
Chairman, said this in Lagos on Tuesday at the 4th Edition of West African
Information and Communications Technology (WAFICT) Congress and Exhibition
2012.
The exhibition, which was organised by IT
& Telecom Digest, an ICT publication, had the theme ‘’Bridging West
Africa’s Digital Divide through Broadband’.
He said that having conquered the voice
telephony, the country was ripe for broadband services and which the NCC was
working towards.
According to him, the NCC had deployed the
Open Access model for broadband deployment.
“The Open Access model provides a framework
for sophisticated infrastructure sharing and prevents dominance of one
company,” he said.
Juwah said that the plans of the NCC for
the broadband deployment had also received quality advice and guide from the
International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
He said that the commission had engaged
reputable internationally acclaimed consultants to drive the strategy and
design the processes towards achieving the broadband goals.
‘’Broadband is simply characterised by the
speed at which the internet highways transmit data from one end of the world to
another or from one computer to another,’’ Juwah said.
He said that the regulatory environment in
the country had remained stable and attractive to the global investment
community, hence the commission intended to attract more broadband investors.
Mr Mkpe Abang, the Editor-in-Chief of IT
& Telecom Digest, said that there was the need for the Federal Government
to declare a state of emergency for broadband deployment in the country.
Abang said that the country had conquered
voice telephony, hence the need to go to the next revolution, which is
broadband.
He said broadband penetration in Africa was
low compared to other parts of the world.
‘’A recent report estimates that only about
5.7 per cent of African population has internet access,’’ he said.
