American Corner Trains 50 Nigerians In US

The United States Consul General in Nigeria, Will Stevens, has said that the American Corner partnership with Nigeria had assisted in training over 50 young Nigerians in six-week exchange programmes in United States.
The Consul General noted that through the partnership, millions of dollar grants had been given to Nigerians to start their own businesses.
Will said thousands of Nigerians, including women, had benefited through the partnership over the years.
The Consul General stated this in Port Harcourt while launching the MOBA Waste Tyre Recycling graduation at University of Port Harcourt, Choba, last Wednesday.
Stevens said the American Corner was aimed at assisting women in creating skills in entrepreneurs through recycling of waste tyres to making a living.
“We are here in UNIPORT to celebrate women in entrepreneurs; we are here to train women in business skills.
“We are recycling waste tyres into home use as to create wealth in our society”, he said.
He noted that the partnership had helped in impacting business ideas into the female folks on how to create wealth and recycled waste tyres into home use.
Stevens, who was accompanied by top US government officials, said the project would also help the women in creating jobs in their local communities.
The American Corner, he said, had partnered with University of Port Harcourt for over 10 years in academic exchange programmes at all levels.
“Our students and UNIPORT students are learning from each other through the partnership.
“We are working together to find solutions in Africa problems, we are focusing in bringing American opportunities to University of Port Harcourt.
“We are focused in helping female entrepreneurs to create business opportunities through the partnership”, he said.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Prof Owunari Georgewill, thanked the Consul General for visiting the university community to celebrate the graduands.
He thanked the Consulate for partnering with the institution through the American Corner established in the UNIPORT.
Georgewill lauded the Consulate General for its financial and moral supports to youths of Nigeria as he solicited for more educational funding in the Ivory Tower to help in carrying out research and improve learning.
He appealed to the Consulate General to assist and turn the university to more American in nature as people come here under the American Corner for skills.
“Certificates and Degrees are no longer enough, but when you combine certificates, Degrees with skills, you produce a total man and woman in the society,” Georgewill said.
“In UNIPORT, we learn American cultures, languages and education, which is helping in improving knowledge and learning in the institution”, he said.
