Centre Honours NAWOJ Chairperson
The Centre for Gender, Conflict and Development Studies (CGCDS) of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has honoured the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, Susan Serekara- Nwikhana for her services to humanity.
The ceremony which held on Wednesday at the Faculty of Law Auditorium of the university of Port Harcourt during the second edition of the International Conference on Gender, Environment and Development, saw the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Owunari Georgewill being represented by Prof Esiosa Onorogiuwa and other dignitaries in attendance .
In her speech after receiving the award, Serekara-Nwikhana expressed joy over the award, saying it came to her as a surprise because she was not expecting it.
She thanked the Director of CGCDS, Prof Heoma Nsirim- Worlu for finding her worthy of the award, assuring that she would live up to expectations.
“ I was lifted for the award, it is like when man is planning to pull you down, God is having a greater package for you that trust in Him, I want to use this opportunity to thank all my supporters that have been there for me right from the day I was elected as Chairperson of NAWOJ, Rivers State Chapter. This award will spur me to do more when it comes to the issues of the girl child and women in the society, for this prestigious university to honour me, I am very excited,’’ she said.
She dedicated the award to God Almighty and all her fellow Nawojians, saying despite the challenges, they have been there for her.
“Definitely the award given to me today is a testimony that I am also ready to do more and it will spur me to do more especially on issues related to the girl child and women in the society. The award is really encouraging and I promise to keep on doing what is right for the service to humanity.’’
Meanwhile, the Director of CGCDS, UNIPORT, Prof Heoma Nsirim – Worlu said that CGCDS as a centre, its goal is equity and inclusiveness as it is committed to inspiring inclusivity which means everyone, everywhere.
According to her, the International Conference on Gender Environment and Development had several sub- themes and the aim was to bring together stakeholders and experts working in the areas of gender, environment and development in order to make evidence based on inputs on important issues bordering on the world in general.
Pro Nsirim – Worlu said that gender is all about humanity (males and females) and their complementary roles as members of the active human society.
