Monarchs Decry High Incidence Of Soot In Rivers …Laud Wike’s Proactive Stance To Tackle Menace
The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has decried the high incidence of soot occasioned by the activities of artisanal refinery operators and crude oil thieves in the state.
A statement signed by the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Natural Ruler and Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, in Port Harcourt, and made available to The Tide, last Monday, said that the high incidence of sooth in Rivers State has eclipsed the atmosphere, and polluted the air, land and seas around the state.
He lamented that as a result, life expectancy of the present and future generations has been dangerously undermined.
Jaja further stated that, “this form of pollution is suspected to be responsible for increase in health hazards such as bronchitis, asthma, lung cancer and heart attacks which are prevalent in the state”.
He, therefore, on behalf of Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, issue modular refinery licenses to operators of illegal refineries to engage in lawful and controlled production of fuel and other products to save the health of the people and keep the precious environment clean.
The monarch further urged government to promulgate a law banning illegal refineries.
Jaja further appealed to the Federal Government to direct the release of enough money from the Ecological Fund and also empower other environmental agencies to combat the health hazard induced by the activities of “Kpo fire” operators in the state.
He deplored the situation where boats and tankers loaded with illegally refined product were set ablaze by security agencies in the open thereby amplifying the level of soot instead of disposing the products in a way that would not hurt the environment.
He implored the security agents to device a new way of disposing the illegal petroleum products than burning.
The chairman of RSCTR entreated the governors of the South-South geopolitical zone, led by their Chairman and Governor of Delta State, DrIfeanyiOkowa, to take up the issue as a matter of urgency with the Federal Government as soot pollution was gradually enveloping the whole region.
