CAF Names Eguavoen Group Stage Best Coach
Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has been named the best coach for the group stage of the 2021 African Cup of Nations by the Confederation of African Football.
Tidesports source also reports that Eagles stars, William Troost-Ekong and Moses Simon, were listed in the Best XI for the group phase.
There was however no space for Eagles mercurial midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, who was listed on the 12-man substitute bench along with high-profile names Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Karl Toko-Ekambi.
In a 4-3-3 formation, Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohammed El Shenawy was adjudged the best goalkeeper in the group stage after conceding just once against Nigeria in their opening game.
Also, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Ivory Coast’s Ghislain Konan are in the left and right full-back positions, while Troost Ekong and Egypt’s Ahmed Hegazi have been listed as the best central defenders of the group phase.
In midfield, Cameroon’s Yves Bissouma beats Ndidi to the holding midfield position, while Guinea’s Naby Keita and Gambia’s Musa Barrow complete the midfield set-up.
In attack, Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal was chosen in the right wing position, while Simon holds the left wing spot after scoring one goal and providing one assist in the group phase. The Nigerian winger has been one of the most outstanding players in the competition.
The centre forward position goes to the tournament’s top scorer, Vincent Aboubakar, who netted five goals in the group stage.
Reacting to being named best coach of the group stage, Eguavoen, says it wouldn’t have been possible without the players.
“Many thanks to the Confederation of African Football for this award. The best coach of the group stage wouldn’t have been possible without my fantastic group of players and colleagues,” Eguavoen tweeted.
