Court Hears Suit To Compel NLNG, Shell To Pay N20bn To Bonny, Jan 17
A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, yesterday, fixed January 17, 2022 for hearing of motion in a suit filed by the Founding and Aboriginal Royal Houses of Bonny Kingdom, known as the Association of DUAWARIS.
The Founding Royal Houses of Grand Bonny Kingdom had gone to court to seek judicial redress for the inability of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) and Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) to pay the sum of N20billion as proceeds accruing to the people of Bonny as agreed.
When the matter came up in court, the Lawyer representing the Founding and Aboriginal Royal Houses of Bonny Kingdom, Ikpe Imeh filed an application seeking leave of the court to serve all parties in the matter through substituted means.
Responding, the Counsel representing NLNG in the matter, Elechi Sunday moved a motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit, and urged the court to hear their ex-parte motion first before hearing the applicant’s motion.
He, however, said he was not opposing the motion as sought by the claimants’ lawyer.
In her ruling, after listening to the arguments from the counsel representing the two parties, the trial Judge, Justice Phoebe Ayua granted the application of the claimants to serve all parties through substituted means, and adjourned the case to January 17, 2022 for motion.
Speaking outside the courtroom, counsel representing the claimants, Ikpe Imeh said his clients were in court to seek justice for the inability of NLNG and Shell to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility to the people.
However, counsel to NLNG declined to speak with journalists after the court sitting.
The Tide reports that other defendants in the matter include, Shell, Corporate Affairs Commission, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, as well as the Rivers State Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, among others.
