S’East Taekwondo Championships: Enugu Chairman Tasks Athletes On Laurels
Enugu State Chairman of Taekwondo Association, Ebere Amaraizu, has tasked the state’s athletes preparing for the forthcoming South-East Taekwondo National Championship to win lots of laurels for the state.
Amaraizu gave the charge in a chat with newsmen in Enugu, yesterday, on the preparations of the state’s athletes.
It would be recalled that the South-East Taekwondo U-18 Championship has been slated to take place on Aug. 21, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
He lauded coaches and members of state taekwondo association board for their efforts at ensuring that the upcoming competition was a huge success, with the state hauling a good number of medals.
Amariazu stated that the upcoming event would create an ample opportunity and platform for self discovery and winning of laurels for the state.
“It is also important that our children and youths be reminded about the positive value orientation which taekwondo inputs in ones’ life.
“This orientation revolves around integrity, modesty, survival skills for good life, coping skills, indomitable spirit and lots more.
“These taekwondo tenets will help children and youths in self discovery and strategic leadership direction,” he said.
Amaraizu said, the championship was being supported by the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) because it revolved around children and youth value reorientation, self discovery and strategic leadership.
The event would feature black belt Kukkuwon grading, as well as a National Taekwondo referees’ course.
Other categories to be featured include, Kiddles between U-5 and U-10 years, Cadets between U-11 and U-14 and Junior for between U-15 and U-17 years.
All the five South-East states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo State are expected at the championships.

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
