Bayelsa Coastline Communities Allege Toxic Waste Dumping
Oil companies host communities in Bayelsa State, under the auspices of KEFFES, have raised alarm over the alleged pollution of the coastline in their areas with suspected toxic waste.
The oil-bearing KEFFES, which is an acronym for Koluama I &II, Ekeni, Fish Town, Foropa, Ezetu I & II and Sangana communities in Southern Ijaw and Brass Local Government Areas, are on the fringes of the Atlantic Ocean.
In a save-our-soul message to the federal and state governments, the communities lamented that the pollution had brought untold hardship to them.
The Chairman of KEFFES CDC Chairmen Forum, Patrick Ekubo, and the secretary, Braladei Brisibe, said in Yenagoa on Monday that the incident was noticed on March 15, 2020 and had not abated since then.
They lamented the “strange increase” in the pollution of Nigeria’s territorial waters with suspected chemical substance in recent times.
Brisibe said: “The chemical substance, we cannot give a name to it for now, but then we experienced a toxic material that was washed ashore. This material is very dangerous because we have seen signs.
“First of all, we saw the effect of the toxic material on the number of fishes that were dead; sea fishes and marine life and domestic animals. Our dogs that ate fishes washed ashore died in our community.”
They called on the federal and state governments to come to their aid and halt the dangerous practice of alleged dumping of chemical waste in the ocean.
The KEFFES people threatened that if no action was taken to ameliorate their suffering within 21 days, they would shut down oil production in their area.
