LG Boss Faults Firms Over Tenement Rate
The Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Phillip Okparaji, has decried the refusal of companies operating in the local government area to pay tenement rate to the council.
Hon. Okparaji also took exception to the high rate of youth unemployment in Eleme in spite of the presence of many companies in the area.
The council boss made the declaration while receiving the executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, who were on a courtesy visit to his office on Monday.
Hon. Okparaji alleged that apart from Indorama, no other company operating in the local government area paid tenement rate to the council.
He said other companies operating in the area were fond of showing federal laws that permit them to operate without paying tenement rate either to the council or to the state government.
He said, “Apart from Indorama, there is no other company that pays us tenement rate. If you go to these companies, they will show you one federal law that says they should not pay anything to local government or the state government.
But how do we carry out our responsibility if you don’t pay, to complement the allocation we are receiving from the Federal Government?”
The council chairman also lamented that in spite of high presence of companies including refineries in Eleme, there was high level of youth unemployment in the area.
He described as unfortunate a situation where companies in the area denied Eleme indigenes employment opportunities.
“The people of Eleme, we are suffering from high unemployment. You may see a lot of companies here. The analysis is that after Obio Akpor is Eleme…. But it is unfortunate that they don’t give our people the opportunity.
“Even the turn-around maintenance that Indorama did from 1st of October to 25th of October, nobody from Eleme was there”, he said.
Earlier, the chairman of the Rivers State Council of NUJ, Comrade Stanley Job Stanley, had urged local government councils in the state to collaborate with the security agencies and state government in fighting security in the state.
He commended Hon. Okparaji and his team for developmental strides recorded in less than one and half years in office and urged other councils in the state to emulate the council.
The NUJ chairman said his executive was in Eleme to felicitate with Hon Okparaji on his election and to partner with him in the area of human and infrastructural development.
