Group Petitions AGF, Demands NDDC Transfer Reversal

A group, Accountable Leadership for Better Nigeria Initiative, has petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, over the recent transfer of the Niger Delta Development Commission to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.
The group specifically drew the attention of the AGF to the constitutional breaches committed with the agency’s transfer from the Presidency to the Ministry.
The ALBNI, in a letter by its counsel, Tolu Babaleye & Co, in a letter dated 10th October, 2019, and addressed to Malami, has therefore issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Presidency for the reversal of the decision.
The group argued that the laws setting up the NDDC explicitly states that the supervision of the Commission shall be under the control of the President.
It added that the AGF, being the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, should address the alleged illegality within two weeks.
The group said it was the duty of the Attorney-General to reverse the decision of the President, carried out by his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari.
The group in the petition, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, threatened to take the matter to court if its ultimatum was ignored.
However, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Goodwill Akpabio, declined comments when contacted by our correspondent.
Speaking through his media aide, Ani Ekong, the Minister said all enquiries should be directed to the Presidency.
He said, “The minister will not make any comment on the group’s petition. It was not addressed to him and he was not the one who did the transfer.”
The petition read in part, “We shall take to our clients’ outstanding instructions of taking tne matter to court at the expiration of the time stated above if the matter is not resolved to the knowledge of Nigerians.
