Blame Buhari For NNPC’s Woes -Technocrat
A technocrat, Dr Reuben Mietamuno Jaja, has blamed the Federal Government for the inability of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to discharge its statutory functions.
Speaking with news men in Port Harcourt during the weekend, the technocrat said; “ Nigerians deserved to know how Buhari’s government tied the hands of the NNPC with shackles of state apparatus and unnecessary policy sommersaults barring it from delivering desired services as the bastion of the petroleum industry. “
He said the Nigerian oil and gas industry was in a parlous state and needs radical transformation for optimisation of the hydrocarbon potentials in Nigeria, noting that wrong approaches towards reformation has stalled the productive capacity of the NNPC.
According to Jaja who is the chairman of an American based industrial group, BFI, “The NNPC is a product of the Nigerian state and it will be wrong to demonize NNPC in a conspiracy of present leadership”
He said the legal basis for the creation of NNPC was at variance with world class commercial orientation paradigm as in the case of other multinational oil companies.
He said it was regrettable that while government in all the solely-owned companies in other climes allow the firms to run without interference by collecting taxes, royalties, among others, the government in Nigeria currently determines otherwise.
He further decried the frequent changes in the leadership of the NNPC, especially under the Buhari administration, noting that such changes were indication of lack of forthrightness on the part of government; “in the leading National oil companies (NOCs), the leadership structure outlives much political leadership. But what is the NNPC story? Under President Buhari alone,NNPC has changed Group Managing Directors in less than five years. It also, by extension, had about eight executive directors who even spent few days in office. I don’t know of any oil company in the world with such unpalatable turnover and is still functioning, he said.
He called for a total overhaul of the NNPC to be shelved from unfettered government intervention to enable it deliver on its statutory mandate.

Power Supply Boost: FG Begins Payment Of N185bn Gas Debt
In the bid to revitalise the gas industry and stabilise power generation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorised the settlement of N185 billion in long-standing debts owed to natural gas producers.
The payment, to be executed through a royalty-offset arrangement, is expected to restore confidence among domestic and international gas suppliers who have long expressed concern about persistent indebtedness in the sector.
According to him, settling the debts is crucial to rebuilding trust between the government and gas producers, many of whom have withheld or slowed new investments due to uncertainty over payments.
Ekpo explained that improved financial stability would help revive upstream activity by accelerating exploration and production, ultimately boosting Nigeria’s gas output adding that Increased gas supply would also boost power generation and ease the long-standing electricity shortages that continue to hinder businesses across the country.
The minister noted that these gains were expected to stimulate broader economic growth, as reliable energy underpins industrialisation, job creation and competitiveness.
In his intervention, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Secretariat, Ed Ubong, said the approved plan to clear gas-to-power debts sends a powerful signal of commitment from the President to address structural weaknesses across the value chain.
“This decision underlines the federal government’s determination to clear legacy liabilities and give gas producers the confidence that supplies to power generation will be honoured. It could unlock stalled projects, revive investor interest and rebuild momentum behind Nigeria’s transition to a gas-driven economy,” Ubong said.
