Easter: Police, NSCDC Deploy 5,700 Personnel In Edo
The Edo State Police Command yesterday said no fewer than 5,000 personnel had been deployed for essential duty to ensure safety and hitch-free Easter celebration in the state.
Similarly, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) command in the state said it had mobilised 700 personnel for effective traffic control across the state during the period.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mohammed DanMallam, told newsmen in Benin that deployment of large number of personnel was to provide adequate security before, during and after the Easter celebration.
Noting that “Easter is an important event for Christians’’, the commissioner said that the command had mapped out guidelines through “the force operations order’’ which had been circulated to all formations within the state.
He explained that part of the guidelines was for all Heads of formations to provide adequate security arrangement as well as embark on “stop-and-search’’, and raiding of criminal hideouts across the state.
According to him, in view of this, officers have been strategically positioned to identify flash points and other areas for stop-and-search, and the measure is in line with visibility policing.
The police boss said that the major challenge to the command was cultism, adding however, that the command had been able to combat and reduce the phenomenon.
He, however, added that the fight against cultism in the state was continuous, and reiterated that the command would continue to arrest and prosecute cultists.
