Yuletide: Police Assure On Security …Ban Fireworks In Rivers
The Rivers State Police Command says it’s ready to provide a crime free and peaceful atmosphere for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
It however has banned the use of fireworks during the celebrations, as it called on parents to warn their wards from using fireworks and crackers during the period.
Addressing newsmen yesterday, Rivers State Police Commissioner, Zaki Ahmed said as part of security measures to ensure safety of people and properties during the festive period, the command has ordered intensive patrols in the metropolis.
Also, he disclosed that intensive patrol have been ordered along the East West Road, and Elele/Omerelu/Owerri Road, where criminal activities have risen in the past few months.
“There will also be visibility policing, where our men will be deployed to strategic locations across the command to give a sense of security to all and sundry, as they celebrate the Christmas and New Year seasons”, Ahmed assured.
The Police Commissioner further assured that the agency is aware that the season will be characterised by an upsurge in criminal activities, hence security arrangements have put in place for a hitch-free end of year celebrations.
He also used the medium to call on political parties and their members to be peaceful during the campaigns.
Ahmed promised that the Police will remain apolitical to ensure that that 2019 elections is devoid of violence and acrimony.
He said, “we promise to provide a level playing field for the political parties and to appeal to them to play the game by the rules”.
The Rivers State police boss however reiterated that the police will not hesitate to deal with those found breaching the peace of the state, no matter how such person is highly placed.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
