RSG Concludes Allocation Of Rumuokoro Market
The Rivers State Government has concluded allocation of newly built ultra modern Rumuokoro Market and Park in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Projects, Mr. George Kelly told newsmen, last weekend, that the process was open and transparent.
He explained that over 1,351 persons participated in the balloting process done at the new facility.
Kelly said those who were lucky to pick stores were automatically allocated, saying that they were to pay some fees to own the stalls or stores.
The governor’s aide disclosed that the complex has 608 open market stores and 91 lock-up shops.
So far, he explained that those who were lucky to pick the stores were an aggregation of members of National Union of Road Transport Workers, market women, indigenes and non- indigenes, stressing that, “What made the process transparent is that indigenes and non-indigenes participated and it was open”.
Kelly stated that, “It will help decongest the roundabout and shoulders of the road from traffic and street trading.”
He warned that anybody who sells his or her allocation would forfeit the allocation.
On those who did not get, the governor’s aide said, more markets would be built, as he cited Mile 1 Market as one project that would help curb street trading.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Prince Noble Amadi has commended the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike for the transparent process the market was allotted to traders.
