Unremitted Tax: Total Denies Owing A’Ibom N25bn

Total E&P Nigeria Limited (TEPNG) has objected to reports in the media of unremitted Personal Income Tax of N25billion to the Akwa Ibom State Government for the period covering 2011 to 2016.
The company said it neither has record of employees being resident in Akwa Ibom State nor does it maintain any office or operational base in the state.
A statement by the External Relations Manager of the company, Charles Ebereonwu, and made available to The Tide said, “Based on the extant tax laws of Nigeria, TEPNG is not under any obligation to remit Personal Income Tax to the Akwa Ibom State Income Revenue Service (AKSIRS).
“With regard to the claim for Withholding Tax (WHT) by the state government, TEPNG’s position is that the claim was made in error given the fact that the company had since remitted all WHT deducted from payments made to contractors resident in Akwa Ibom State”.
The statement noted that the company would not compromise its robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, which it extends to states within and outside its areas of operation.
It further explained that the firm has proactively engaged all communities within Akwa Ibom State by establishing several Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) wherein it had undertaken to provide infrastructure development projects, employment, capacity building, scholarships and skills acquisition to members of host communities.
“TEPNG continues to contribute to the growth and development of Akwa Ibom State through various CSR programmes as provision potable water, renovation of schools, hospitals and health centres, construction of bridges to ease movement of persons and farm produce, the construction of 310–seater lecture hall at the University of Uyo, amongst numerous others”, it said.
As a responsible law-abiding corporate citizen, the firm stated that it would continue to abide by the laws of Nigeria, meet all statutory obligations and sustain its cordial relationship with Akwa Ibom State.
