PPP’ll Enhance Youth Dev – Tam-George
The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, has stated that the development of youth potential in Rivers State to the fullest capacity and sustainable growth can only thrive on a strong partnership between the government and the private sector.
The commissioner gave the hint while briefing newsmen at the Special Youth Day event held at the Alfred Diette-Spiff Sports Complex in Port Harcourt as part of events to celebrate the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Rivers State.
He disclosed that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of youth development, as government was already the largest employer of labour.
According to him, the involvement of the private sector in youth development programmes will create maximal impact in the capacity building of youth.
The commissioner stated that the Rivers State Government was committed to the development of the potential of the youth through the provision of needed incentives and creating the enabling environment for creative activities to thrive in the state.
Tam-George urged youth in the state to desist from engaging in criminal activities, but cultivate the habit of hard-work to make their lives meaningful.
He said youth should drop the mentality of seeking paid jobs but acquire basic skills and create jobs for themselves, adding that the idea of placing their entire livelihood on oil and gas was no longer sustainable because of the paradigm shift from oil to ICT as the economic hub of the future.
The commissioner, who praised the courage of the Rivers youth, said the Rivers State Government was urbanizing the rural areas through the provision of basic amenities to make life more conductive for rural dwellers and stem rural-urban migration.
