All Hail Nigerian Football Hero, Legend, Victor Ezeji

Published

on

Precisely on the 7th Janu
ary, 2017, Port Harcourt, the Garden City of Nigeria was again on global focus and centre of attraction in terms of sporting activities, as major stakeholders in the football industry both far and near came and participated, and also witnessed the testimonial match of a football legend called Victor Okemka Ezeji.
It was first of its kind in Nigeria, a footballer being honoured with such a high magnitude. That is to say, Vicky Moore, as he is fondly called, by his friends and fans, is exceptional because, no footballer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has achieved what he has accident as a player and developing the game at grassroots level.
Ezeji is no doubt a source of inspiration for the upcoming young footballers occasioned by his gross display of humility, determination and commitment in whatever thing he does.
Victor Ezeji was born in June, 1981, into the family of Mr & Mrs Chukwuemeka Ogbonna Ezeji of Ndagbo Lodu –Imenyi, in Bende local government area, Abia State, Nigeria.
He attended Government Secondary School, Borikiri (GSS) in Port Harcourt, and started his top flight football with the defunct Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt, in 1996.
Following his spectacular performance at that young age, he was later signed by Eagle Cement FC, also in Port Harcourt and was nicknamed “The New Kid in the block”.
His contributions towards the success of defunct Sharks and Dolphins FCs were enormous, but in 2007 he won the FA Cup with Dolphins back to back. In 2009, he scored four goals for Sharks, making him become the first player ever to achieve that feat in Nigeria.
In 2010 he scored the winning goal for same Sharks that made the club won their first ever trophy, West African Football Union (WAFU).
Besides, he has been the only player that has played for 20 league seasons in Nigeria and scored in all the seasons. Unarguable, he is second person in the world with that record, apart from Ryan Giggs of English Premier League (EPL).
Speaking at the ceremony, Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike commended Victor Ezeji over his successful football career, saying that he would have a prominent role to play in football development in the state.
The governor, who was represented by the state commissioner for sports, Hon Boma Iyaye, said Ezeji is an indigene of Rivers State, because he was born and breed in the state, adding that his achievements in football has made entire Rivers people to be proud of him.
“I want to say that the entire people of Rivers State are proud of him, we are happy and excited.
“Today we are honouring Ezeji because our governor is unbiased. You will have a role to play in football, in Rivers State,” he said.
Also speaking, the technical adviser of Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt, Stanley Eguma, said Victor Ezeji is worthy of emulation because of his comportment and indiscipline while playing football as these are things that actually made him to succeed.
According to him, he started monitoring Ezeji, when he was under 13, and today he has made significant impact in Nigeria football.
“No doubt, Victor Ezeji is one of the best players Nigeria has produced, he is committed, determined and have self discipline.
“Today he is a legend, today he has made history, today he is worthy of emulation. “Eguma said.
He prayed God to give him long Life and good health, to carry out other activities as he has hang-boot for active football.
In his reaction, Ex-Super Eagles striker, Mutiu Adepoju, also commended Ezeji for his consistency for 20 good seasons, pointing out that Ezeji was a good striker in his playing days.
He explained that before he saw Ezeji he has been hearing his name, having left for Europe in 1999, before Ezeji started to play.
“I have been hearing that there is a good striker in Nigeria called Victor Ezeji, because I left Nigeria in 1999 before we started to play active football.
“Today we are happy for him, not only us in Nigeria, but the La Liga in Spain also appreciate him, that is why I am personally here to give him the gift from them, as a representative of La-Liga here in Nigeria,” Adepoju said.
The chairman of Main Organizing Committee (MOC) of Victor Ezeji testimonial match, China Acheru said, Ezeji earned his legendry status and worthy to be celebrated because apart from the fact that he played successful 20 seasons which is a record in Nigeria, in 2002 he shared the highest goal scorer award with Ghana’s Frimpong, that earned him automatic invitation to Super Eagle’s team.
In 2003 he won both CAF Champions League and NPFL with Enyimba FC of Aba, making them first set of players to achieve that feat.
Consequently, he set a transfer fee record of N4m from Enyimba to Dolphins, in 2004. That same year he won both NPFL and FA cup with the club. Most importantly he was voted the most valuable player (MVP) in both competitions.
That feat made Ezeji the first player till date to bag both MVPs. Besides, that he has captained Nigeria Under-23 football team that almost missed Athens 2014 Olympics, in Greece.
Infact, in 2007, he also won FA Cup back to back with Dolphins, before he moved to Tunisia where he joined Club African and won the Tunisian Champion for the first time in 12 years.
In 2011 he was inducted into the UNIPORT HALL OF FAME as the first player to move from the school team to Super Eagles.
While Ere Dokubo, former coach of Sharks said he lack words to describe Ezeji because he was a very good player any one can think of.
“Ezeji has paid his dues in terms of football. As a young boy, he played under me in Pioneer FC, since then I know he will go places.
“Imagine the caliber of persons that attended the testimonial match today, honestly I am proud of him,” Dokubo said.
Former Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavon, also commended Ezeji for the role he played in Nigeria football.
He described Ezeji as a very humble footballer, that strives and achieve his purpose.
“I am really proud of him, he his a living legend. This is the first time such thing is happening at the local scene. I am really impressed today”, Eguavon said.
High point of the event was the presentation of La Liga award by Mutiu Adepoju and award of excellence presented by President of United Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (UYFSON) Chief Godspower Kokoriko and others.
At the end of the testimonial match team Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) won team Ezeji 2-1.

Tottenham Fight Back To Hold Brighton

Published

on

Tottenham fought back from two-goals down to secure a deserved point against Brighton.

The Seagulls were second best for much of the match but found themselves 2-0 up after 31 minutes thanks to Yankuba Minteh’s early strike and Yasin Ayari’s powerful drive.

However, Richarlison halved the deficit just before half-time when he stopped a shot by Mohammed Kudus before slotting in.

Spurs dominated the second half but their finishing let them down as Richarlison and substitute Xavi Simons were both unable to make the most of promising opportunities.

But the equaliser came eight minutes from time when Jan Paul van Hecke turned Kudus’ cross into his own net.

Spurs then pushed for a winner as they looked to continue their impressive start to the season, but Brighton held on for the point.

Bundesliga: Kane Continues Goal Harvest (5)

Harry Kane scored his second hat-trick of the season as Bayern Munich overcame a shaky start to win at Hoffenheim and continue their 100% start.

The England captain, 32, broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a clinical first-time finish from a cleverly worked low corner, and doubled Bayern’s lead from the spot after Albian Hajdari was harshly penalised for a handball.

That broke Hoffenheim’s resistance and Kane completed his ninth Bundesliga hat-trick with another penalty, given for a foul on substitute Michael Olise after a video assistant referee (VAR) check.

This time Kane sent home keeper Oliver Baumann the wrong way for his 13th Bayern goal in seven matches across all competitions this season, adding to his Champions League double against Chelsea last Wednesday.

“Hat-trick Harry is what they called me in school,” Kane told Tidesports source after the match. “That one kind of stuck when I was younger.”

“Any ball in the box, whether penalty or not, I back myself to hit the target.”

Hoffenheim had the better of the first 45 minutes, Fisnik Asllani only able to hit the post after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer passed straight to the Kosovan.

They eventually got some reward for their efforts, former West Ham full-back Vladimir Coufal’s deflected free-kick beating Neuer to earn the Czech his first goal for the club.

Ex-Liverpool winger Luis Diaz hit the top of the bar late on as he failed to continue his record of scoring in every Bundesliga game this season, but Serge Gnabry added a fourth for Bayern with the last kick, converting a rebound from a tight angle after Baumann saved from Joshua Kimmich.

Nicolas Jackson made his first start since joining Bayern on an initial loan deal from Chelsea, but the Senegal striker had a very quiet game before being replaced in the 62nd minute.

In Italy, Lorenzo Pellegrini fired Roma into the Serie A top four as Lazio had two players sent off in a fiery derby.

The midfielder found the bottom corner in the 38th minute as Roma extended their unbeaten run to four games against their city rivals.

Lazio have lost three of their opening games of the season and had Reda Belahyane and former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi dismissed in late drama.

Roma started well and Rome-born Pellegrini claimed the vital goal – his fourth in a Rome derby after being available for transfer in the summer – following good work down the right by Matias Soule.

But the hosts will rue missed opportunities as Boulaye Dia, Mattia Zaccagni and Alessio Romagnoli all had openings.

With four minutes left substitute Belahyane was shown a red card for a late studs-up challenge on Manu Kone.

Danilo Cataldi struck the outside of the post for Lazio in a last-gasp effort to snatch a point, while team-mate Guendouzi was sent off for dissent after the final whistle.

Zidane’s Son Switches Allegiance To Algeria

Published

Luca Zidane, the son of France’s World Cup-winning playmaker Zinedine, has switched his international allegiance from France to Algeria.

Born just outside Marseille, the 27-year-old goalkeeper had appeared for France at various youth levels.

The move, which was approved by Fifa, may enable Zidane to follow in his father’s footsteps by appearing at a World Cup, with Algeria expected to secure a place at the 2026 finals in North America in their qualifier against Somalia next month.

Zidane, who is the second of four brothers, all of whom came through the Real Madrid academy, currently plays for Spanish second tier side Granada.

He played two matches for Madrid and has La Liga experience at Rayo Vallecano, but dropped a level in 2022 to play for Eibar before heading to Andalusia in 2024.

Zidane qualifies for the North African country through his father, whose parents hailed from the Kabylie region of Algeria.

Zinedine Zidane, who is regarded as one of the games greatest players scored twice for France in their 1998 World Cup final victory over Brazil, but was famously sent-off in the 2006 final, which was won by Italy after a penalty shootout.

Man Utd Beat Chelsea To Ease Pressure

Published

on

Manchester United capitalised on Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card to secure a crucial victory over Chelsea in torrential rain at Old Trafford.

The first match in Premier League history to see two or more goals, red cards and substitutions in the first half was settled by goals from United skipper Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, who was the other player sent off before the break.

It was Sanchez’s dismissal that set the course of the game though.

The Spain international raced from his goal to meet Bryan Mbeumo as the striker ran beyond the Chelsea defence.

Sanchez then upended the forward outside his area rather than allow him past to tap the ball into an empty net.

Enzo Maresca’s response to the red card was to take off both Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian and, as Cole Palmer had to be replaced after suffering a recurrence of a groin injury, Chelsea had lost three attacking players in the space of 20 minutes.

Trevor Chalobah pulled one back for Chelsea with a header 10 minutes from time but United kept their nerves at bay to make it to the final whistle with their lead intact.

The victory was United’s second of the season and came in front of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who gave head coach Ruben Amorim assurances over his future 48 hours earlier.

It also means Chelsea have still not won at Old Trafford since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was United manager.
