Today Is Private Schools’ Day …NAPPS Suspends Academic Work For Observance
About 2,000 registered private schools and 1,000 non-registered schools in Rivers State and other private schools in other states across the country will today suspend all academic activities to observe this year’s National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools Day in the country.
The President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Rivers State, Chief Victor A.D.Green, who revealed this while speaking with The Tide, said the purpose of the occasion was to sensitize the public about the activities of NAPPS and to use the opportunity to appeal to the governments at all levels and their agencies to aid private schools in the country, and Rivers State in particular, in addressing some of the problems and challenges confronting them.
Green noted that NAPPS Day is a day set aside to mark the contributions of private schools in Nigeria to the development of the educational system, adding that attention would be focused on looking at issues confronting private schools, celebrate private sector contributions to education, and also present prizes to the winners of quiz and debate competitions.
He noted that NAPPS Day activities, which started last week Tuesday, with the Theme: ‘Strengthening Our Values via Quality Services, will end today.
According to him,’’ one of the challenges of the association is the constant harassment of members by tax collectors who often intimidate them with impunity.
Green, however, said the association was ready to pay all the lawful taxes if they are harmonized, stressing that the constant harassment and brutalization of its members on daily basis was worrisome.
The president commended the Chief Nyesom Wike-led administration in the state for lifting embargo placed on approval of private schools in the state.
Green, however, appealed to the state government to call its tax agents to order.
