The Student Union Government (SUG) and the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS), two umbrella unions at the State College of Arts and Science popularly called RIVCAS say they will support the state government’s effort to rename the institution to Port Harcourt City Polytechnics.
The RIVCAS SUG President, Comrade Daniel Uchendu made this assertion while speaking with The Tide in an interview at the School Campus, in Port Harcourt, Wednesday.
Comrade Uchendu said the students leadership and the students on the same page with the state government in the change of the institution’s name, adding that the intention of the state government in that direction was for the good of the students and the entire state.
The SUG President said that if the institution becomes operational with the new name, it would provide the youth seeking higher education, access to admission.
He berated those who are criticizing the process of the renaming of the institution by the state government and described their actions as unprogressive and self centred.
Uchendu used the medium to allay the fears of those who are thinking that the renaming of the institution would affect the Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnics at Bori LGA adding that many states in the county have two polytechnics.
He noted that the institution has been operating as a Polytechnic for over four years and commended the State governor for mustering the political will to actualize the renaming of the institution.
He further thanked the state legislators for their support to the executive bill and urged them to pass the bill into law to enable the state government realize its objectives.
Also speaking, the NURSS President, RIVCAS, Comrade Balango Taria Kingsley described the move as a welcome development and urged the state governor not to be deterred by the actions of those criticizing the effort.
