Chinese Media Plans Decorders, TV Plant In Nigeria
Chinese media group,
StarTimes, says it will establish a manufacturing plant in Nigeria to produce decoders and television sets.
The Chairman of the company, Mr Xinxing Pang, disclosed this on Monday when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, visited StarTimes headquarters in Beijing, China.
A statement issued on the visit by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Mr Segun Adeyemi,quoted Pang as saying that the manufacturing plant was part of StarTimes’ planned expansion project in Nigeria.
Pang, according to the statement, said his company was ready to invest more in Nigeria, especially in the area of content provision and the building of state-of-the-art studios.
He described the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) as his company’s most important partner in Africa.
Pang also said that his company, established in 1988, operated in more than 30 African countries, with more than 7 million digital television subscribers.
According to the statement, the minister acknowledged that the partnership between StarTimes and NTA had revolutionised television viewing in Nigeria.
“We are very proud of our association with you, especially the partnership between you and the NTA,’’ he said.
Mohammed expressed gratitude to Pang over his stated plans to expand its operations in Nigeria.
He congratulated the company for the “giant strides’’ it had made in under 30 years of its existence.
