RSG Threatens Telecom Operators Over Mast

The Rivers State Government has threatened to shut down any telecommunications mast in the state that is not properly maintained.
The commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Sir Chinyere Igwe, who said this in a press release made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt, also accused telecommunications operators in the state of turning their masts into criminal hub and as location for various illegal activities.
He accused most telecommunications operators of not properly maintaining their masts in line with extant regulations.
“It has come to the notice of the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Urban Development and physical planning that telecommunications network operators in Rivers State have turned their mast transformer to criminals hub and various kinds of illegal activities.
“The Hon Commissioner also observed that the masts are not properly maintained in line with extant regulations”.
It urged the operators to ensure proper security and maintenance of masts as well as the surrounding environment, as any such further discovery around the mast would result to shutting down of such mast at the owners’ risk.
Meanwhile, the commissioner for Urban Development and physical planning, Sir Chinyere Igwe says the on-going demolition of illegal structures in Port Harcourt City and its its environment is not meant to witchhunt anybody.
Sir Igwe who said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt said that the exercise was meant to restore the city of Port Harcourt to its garden city status.
He also said that the ministry will extend the exercise to other towns and villages in the state.
The commissioner also warned against the proliferations of illegal trading posts and parks in the city and disclosed plans by the ministry to enforce laws against street trading in Port Harcourt and its environs.
