Piracy: FISON Urges Navy To Intensify Patrol On Waterways
The Chairman, Fisheries
Society of Nigeria (FISON), Rivers State chapter, Dr Awotein George, has appealed to the Nigerian Navy to intensify its patrol of the country’s territorial waters to check the activities of pirates.
George told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the activities of pirates had led to scarcity of fish in the country.
He said that sea pirates terrorised fishermen and robbed them of cash, fish and sometimes their fishing boats.
George, who is also the Head of Department (HOD), Fisheries and Aquatic Environment, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, said that several fishermen had abandoned fishing due to the activities of pirates.
He said that the activities of pirates had compelled Nigerians to eat imported ice fish which are in short supply most of the times.
The chairman advised fish farmers to cash in on the scarcity of fish in the country to expand their fish business.
He said that fish production was becoming costly due to the high cost of fish feeds.
He said that fish feeds gulp more than 70a per cent of the total cost of fish production.
George appealed to the Federal Government to subsidise the cost of fish feeds for fish farmers just as it subsidised inorganic fertiliser for crop farmers.
