Sea Pirates Kill Four Policemen At Abonnema
Suspected sea pirates,
numbering 24 attacked and killed four policemen, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Abonnema in Akuku-Toru Local Government of Rivers State.
The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday when the gunmen on mask stormed the area in four speed boats and opened fire on the others and men of the Police Division in the area.
According to sources, the pirates took the policemen at Abonnema by surprise, as they were not expecting such attack with the relative peace in the area.
Our source further said although several sea pirates attacks have been reported in recent times around the area on to Nembe creek axis in Bayelsa State, but was not expecting these sea robbers to carry out an attack on the police.
It was learnt that one policeman survived during the attack, but could not confirm if there were other causalities during the operation. Meanwhile, when contacted on phone, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) of the Rivers State Police Command, Ahmed Mohammed, confirmed the killing and said that investigation is on going as to bring the perpetrators to book.
In a related development, armed sea pirates also attacked the Nigerian Marine Police Armoury in Calabar, Cross Rivers State and carted away a large cache of weapons and two gun boats belonging to the police.
It was gathered that the pirates operated for hours without any challenge by the marine police, and during the operation, killed one police officer and a private security man who was on duty at a popular church in the area.
The police spokesman for Cross Rivers State, Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incident that only one policeman was killed by the dare devils and the matter was being investigated.
The Tide also learnt that gunmen suspected to be sea pirates also struck in Akassa, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, killing one Naval officer on Saturday. Naval authorities are yet to comment on the incident.
