NIMASA Upgrades System In Bonny For Quick Response
The Nigeria Maritime Admin
istration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says the upgrading of its Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) in Bonny, Oron and Lagos will further boost the domain awareness response capacity when fully in operation.
The Director of Shipping Development of the Agency, Capt Waredi Eniosuoh, who made this known at a press conference organised by the agency in Lagos recently said the installation of radar in Escravos, Bonny and Takwa Bay in Lagos would also complement the satellite facility and response capability.
Eniosuoh hinted that the facility could equally be used to see beyond the territorial waters of Nigeria and detect vessels that switch off their Automatic Identification System (AIS) as well as interrogate the satellite image for information.
He also disclosed that about six vessels have been arrested for operating illegally on Nigeria’s waters through the use of the surveillance system, adding that the system is capable of detecting vessels that entered Nigeria’s territorial waters with falsified International Maritime Organisation (IMO) number and other ships of interest.
He said “ I can tell you that as we speak, the satellite prints out on a daily basis, for us every vessel that does not meet the requirement. I don’t want to name the vessels that have been arrested, but I can tell you we have five and another one has just joined the list”,
He stressed further that, “we have successfully reversed the trend as we now have complete patrol of our maritime dormain with considerable capability to respond to marine emergencies within a reasonable time frame”.
Eniosuoh however disclosed that NIMASA has currently ran out of security personnel in its maritime guard command to follow up the day-to-day security implementation of the print out of the new system, and said they would apply for more security personnel to meet up the challenges of sea pirates, oil thefts, pipeline vandals among others.
