Equal Opportunities ’ll Check Conflict In Nigeria
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi says providing equal opportunities for all classes of Nigerians will help in addressing the conflicts in the Nigerian polity.
He made the assertion when he played host to the United States of America diplomats led by Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau for Conflict Stabilization and Operations,Rick Barton and US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwinstle in Government House, Port Harcourt at the weekend.
Amaechi said that lack of opportunities, especially to Nigerian youth, was responsible for the increasing conflicts in the country, and therefore, called on the Federal Government to add more value to its security operations through conflict reduction strategies to achieve the needed peace.
In his words, “ the Nigerian Government need to do more to reduce conflict. For me, the only way to reduce conflict is not just equity but the ability to provide opportunity for those who don’t have, because lack of opportunities increases conflicts.”
The Rivers State governor believed that if everybody was given equal opportunities to go about their normal businesses and provide income for themselves, the country would be the better for it, adding that “if we don’t provide such opportunities for them, the Nigerian Government will not sleep because poverty is everywhere. That is what you are seeing in Nigeria”.
He further used the visit to call on the ruling class and elite to make useful contributions that would assist the Federal Government tackle the uprising in the Northern part of the country and ensure peaceful co-existence.
In his remarks earlier, Mr Barton had said he was concerned about a peaceful transition in Nigeria, especially on the stabilization for the social contract between the people and the government.
He believed that with the assistance of the governor and other major stakeholders, the future was bright.
Also speaking Ambassador Entwistle stressed the need to promote reconciliation and reduce of violence, adding that “ I am optimistic about this country and especially the youth”.
The US diplomat expressed the hope that the film training for youths scheme in which both countries are partnering will go a long way in empowering the young ones in the country.
