Stakeholder Calls For PIB Passage
As members of the National Assembly resume plenary after the Christmas and New Year festivities, a businessman has appealed to the lawmakers to ensure the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill that is before them.
a stakeholder from Bayelsa State, Dr Selekey Victor Umeh made the appeal in the chat with The Tide Aviation correspondents on Tuesday shortly before departing for Abuja.
Dr. Victor who is the Chief Executive Officer of an indigenous company opined that the issues raised by those against the Petroleum Industry Bill are negligible to hamper a law that would reduce the loses in the oil sector.
He remarked that a look at the oil and gas industry in Nigeria shows dominance of people from the North and Western extraction as they constitute major players even more than the people from oil producing communities.
“Capacities that have been developed over the years have been from outside those producing oil. I think the National Assembly should pass the PIB in the interest of Nigeria”, he declared.
On the privatization of refineries Dr Victor said “it is not the business of government to run the refineries, private persons should be allowed to operate refineries”.
Speaking further, he said, “I tell you the truth in a few years from now the Dangote refinery will come on stream and you will see, it will never be like this”.
According to him, the way things are done in this country is completely different, civil servants operate like politicians, imagine how they look at public institutions with lukewarm attitude and that is why we are still talking about subsidy and the importation of petroleum products.
He cited example of Eleme Petrochemical that have recorded tremendous growth and recently applied to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to commence production of fertilisers in the country.
