Pirates Attack Passenger Boat, Kill Two In Bayelsa State

Sea pirates last Friday attacked a passenger boat along the Ekeowe waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State, killing two people, security sources have said.
Ekeowe community hosts the newly established federal polytechnic in the state.
According to survivors, the boat was attacked as it approached Ekeowe Town.
The attack, which the survivors said occurred at about 7 a.m. on Friday, lasted for about 35 minutes with the attackers making away with the remains of the victims in a separate boat.
One of those who survived the attack said: “At about 7 a.m., sea pirates attacked travelers near Ekeowe end of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and made away with huge cash and corpse of two passengers.”
According to him, while the attack was ongoing, passenger boats that passed by said they sent distress calls to soldiers of the Joint Task Force guarding oil facilities at the Peremabiri and Olugbobiri areas but no response came.
The spokesperson for the Bayelsa Police Command, Alex Akhigbe, could not be reached for comments.
However, police sources confirmed that a signal was received on some pirate attack along the water ways.
“Marine policemen were deployed to confirm and the report has not been received,” the source said.
