‘Nigeria Yet To Fully Benefit From NEPAD’
The African Heritage Institution (AfriHeritage), an Economic Policy Research organisation, says Nigeria has not fully keyed into the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) to address its development challenges.
AfriHeritage’s observation is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by its Communications Manager, Mr Sola Oluwadare.
Oluwadare said that 12 years after NEPAD was formed, its impact had not been felt across the country particularly in the area of infrastructure development.
He observed that apart from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), other NEPAD instrument and activities were virtually unknown in the country and its website outdated.
“As far as the public is concerned, NEPAD Nigeria has been comatose since 2007,’’ the statement said.
“The belief in some quarters is that after over 12 years since it was adopted, the impact of NEPAD, particularly in the area of infrastructure development has not been seen.
“This has raised a number of questions: Are there any local strategies and/or policies for achieving NEPAD’s objectives?
“Is NEPAD Nigeria getting the necessary funding support from its partners?
“Is Nigeria taking full advantage of the NEPAD Secretariate to fully integrate into the African Union?’’
Oluwadare said that AfriHeritage had therefore concluded arrangement to hold a strategic policy workshop on Thursday, December 12 in Abuja, stressing that, the workshop is aimed at finding answers to these and many other relevant questions.
He stated that the workshop, billed to hold at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, would assess the Federal Government’s efforts at strengthening its partnership with NEPAD.
“Efforts toward proffering solutions that will strengthen the effectiveness of planning and execution of NEPAD’s full agenda for Nigeria will receive attention at the strategic policy workshop.
“The forum will focus specifically on the current level of NEPAD achievements in Nigeria after 12 years of planning and implementation.
“It will also look at what can and will be done to strengthen Nigeria’s programme and strategy for an effective NEPAD going forward.’’
Oluwadare quoted AfriHeritage’s Executive Director, Dr Ifediora Amobi as saying that government would be fully represented at the conference.
According to him, participants are expected from the office of the Secretary of the Government of the Federation.
